ART GALLERY @ FANNIE BAY GAOL

We visited The Museum @ Art Gallery at Fannie Bay. It is set amongst Tropical Gardens. The centre has permanent and temporary exhibitions covering art and craft, natural history, Aboriginal culture, maritime archaeology and N.T. history. Collections encompass visual arts, South East Asia and Oceanic art and material culture, and natural sciences. The fascinating Cyclone Tracy gallery details that devastating event of Christmas Day 1994. After the visit to the Gallery we had lunch on the lawn out the front overlooking Fannie Bay beach. We then went on the Fannie Bay Gaol. It was opened on 1883. It is Darwin's notorious original penal institution, and is now a museum of incarceration. The starkness of the old galvanised iron and netting wire gaol, its crude facilities and a chilling old gallows section will make you glad that you can walk out at the end.
