ORD RIVER AND LAKE ARGYLE CRUISE

We joined the Triple J Tours boat at the Discovery Caravan Park. After picking up other passengers we cruised along the Ord River for 55km towards Lake Argyle. We saw fresh water crocodiles, Cormorants, Ibis and many others. We had lunch which was provided by the tour operators at a riverside camp. Salad, chicken, cold meats, bread roll, cold drinks and tea and coffee. We arrived at the dam and was given a commentary on how the dam was constructed over 3 years during the dry periods. The first part that was constructed was the Diversion Dam which formed Lake Kununurra in 1963. The second was the, construction of an enormous wall 55kms in length, upstream in 1972, which created Lake Argyle. What has resulted is an area rich in wildlife, flora and scenic beauty. After we arrived at the Ord Dam we departed the boat, and did ground tour of Lake Argyle including viewing the Lake from a Scenic Lookout. Also a visit to the historical Durack Homestead. We then boarded another boat and did a tour of Argyle Dam. This area of water is the equivalent of Sydney Harbour, times twenty one. This 3 hour tour was relaxing. Nibblies were provided and we took our alcohol. We also had a swim in the Lake at Sunset. This lake is available for people to swim, dive, snorkel, water ski. However it doesn't get used very much by the locals. They tend to use the Ord River for their activities, or maybe the fresh water crocodiles scare them off. A really nice day. We arrived back at the jetty and returned the 70kms by coach, to our caravan parks.
